Tatra is a vehicle manufacturer based in KopÅ™ivnice, Czech Republic. The company was founded in 1850 by Ignác Šustala as Schustala & Company and was renamed many times. It was called Nesselsdorfer Wagenbau-Fabriksgesellschaft, a wagon and carriage manufacturer, in 1897 produced the first motor car in central Europe, the Präsident. In 1918, it changed its name to KopÅ™ivnická vozovka a.s. and, in 1919, started to use the Tatra badge named after the nearby Tatra mountains in Slovakia. Tatra is the third oldest car maker in the world after Daimler-Benz and Peugeot.
During World War II, was instrumental in the production of trucks, and tank engines for the German war effort. But However, was as the ‘Czech Secret Weapon’ for the scores of Nazi officers who died behind the wheel due to driving heavy, rear-engined Tatras around the corners. So it happened at one point that German officers were forbidden to drive Tatras.
