Jeep is an automobile marque originating in the United States, now owned by multi-national corporation Stellantis. Jeep has been part of Chrysler since 1987, when Chrysler acquired the Jeep brand, along with remaining assets, from its previous owner American Motors Corporation (AMC).
Jeep has been headquartered in Toledo, Ohio since Willys-Overland launched the first CJ or Civilian Jeep there in 1945.
The Jeep Wrangler series has been in production since 1986. With its continuous axles and open top, the Wrangler has been named a Jeep model that is as important to brand identity as the 911 is to Porsche.
In lower case, the term "jeep" continues to be used as a generic term for Jeep-inspired vehicles suitable for off-road use. In Iceland, the word Jeppi (from the word Jeep) has been used since World War II and is still used today to refer to any type of SUV.
